Largest US state capitals — the full ranked list
The complete ranking of largest US state capitals, in order, with what the ranking counts and how firm the figures behind it are. Free reference, no sign-up — and the guessing game that plays the same list.
All fifty state capitals ordered by the population of the city itself, not of the state it governs. That ordering is the point: the largest holds over a million and a half residents and the smallest about eight thousand, fewer people than a large secondary school. Most of them are not the biggest city in their own state, which is why the top of this list is harder to guess than it looks and the bottom is where the points are.
The figures behind this ranking move over time, so the order is right for now rather than fixed.
